Willits Area
"The Gateway to the Redwoods," Willits is a small rural community perched in Mendocino County's rich coastal redwood and fir forests
at 1,350 feet above sea level. The area is verdant, and the rugged mountains surrounding it give rise to some of the
County's largest rivers. Rich in history and blessed by dramatic mountain vistas, ask anyone in town and they'll tell you
Willits is a great place to live.
The home of the world-famous Triple Crown winner Seabiscuit is a community where horse breeders live just down the road from
biodynamic farmers and where loggers and environmentalists have learned to live and work side-by-side.
It is the home of the Mendocino County Historical Museum.
The scrappy former timber town with a population just under 10,000 souls is located at the eastern terminus of the world famous
"Skunk Train," a historic steam and diesel engine line that still carries revelers into the forest for picnics and entertainment.
The Roots of Motive Power is an all-volunteer organization that dedicates its energy to preserving and restoring this historic rail
equipment. Every July 4th, Willits hosts the oldest continuous rodeo in the state.
An energetic arts community and numerous civic organizations are leading Willits in whole new directions;
the entire community is coalescing around creating a truly sustainable community based on strong environmental values.
Willits is the only place in the County that has managed to retain some precision manufacturing following its transition
from being a primarily timber-based economy.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Willits offers close proximity to the playground of the Pacific Coast-strap your kayak to the car
and you'll be there in half an hour! Hiking and biking trails abound as do stream and ocean fishing opportunities.
Year-round, Willits climate is moderate. The moist coastal influence keeps Willits slightly cooler than other
Mendocino County communities. Winter lows average in the mid-40s while summer highs hover around the high 80s.
Snowfall averages 0-3 inches each winter, while rainfall averages are just over 52 inches.
