Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO)
| |
| Since 1951, JCAHO has developed professionally based standards which represent a national consensus on quality patient care. Historically, community health centers have been exempt from meeting JCAHO standards but in 1999, Dr. Fisher, our Board Chair Emeritus, challenged us to raise the bar in our clinical practice by training ourselves to meet and exceed the JCAHO standards.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) is an independent, nonprofit association.
Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to
meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™,
an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years.
The Joint Commission is governed by a 29-member Board of Commissioners that includes nurses, physicians, consumers,
medical directors, administrators, providers, employers, a labor representative, health plan leaders, quality experts,
ethicists, a health insurance administrator and educators. The Board of Commissioners brings to the Joint Commission
countless years of diverse experience in health care, business and public policy. Since 1975, the Joint Commission has developed state-of-the-art standards for medical facilities, including outpatient ambulatory care facilities like those operated by MCHC.
MCHC seeks accreditation because it provides a strong structure for ongoing education in clinical excellence. To achieve it, MCHC staff works diligently in pursuit of excellence. All of us at MCHC are honored to receive this independent acknowledgement of the time and effort we devote to quality improvement. We are proud that our three centers are among the approximately 1,200 freestanding ambulatory care organizations nationwide that maintain JCAHO accreditation. The JCAHO accreditation process occurs on a three-year cycle; our last review occurred in August 2006.
