Dr. Karen Crabtree, OB/GYN, joins Care for Her

UKIAH – Care for Her women’s health center welcomes board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Karen Crabtree to its practice of whole-life care for women. Dr. Crabtree is a Fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has received staff privileges at Ukiah Valley Medical Center and will be performing surgeries and assisting childbirth at that facility.

Care for Her’s Clinical Director, Dr. Tanya Kalmar, OB.GYN, says, “We are very pleased that Dr. Crabtree was interested in our work and our community. Her commitment of working with underserved populations fits well with MCHC’s mission to ‘provide access to excellent healthcare services for the most vulnerable people in our community.’ In addition to working in Ukiah, Dr. Crabtree will expand Care for Her services into northern Lake County. Starting in early November, Dr. Crabtree will be seeing women at Lakeside Health Center in Lakeport. The underserved women of that community will find her services are an important new option to meet their health care needs.”

A native Californian, Dr. Crabtree grew up in San Diego. She pursued and received a B.A. in Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.S.P.H. from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, LA, and an M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine.  She did her OB/GYN training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles County.

For five years prior to joining Care for Her, Dr. Crabtree provided obstetrical and gynecological patient care services to the Navajo people at the Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, a 60-bed hospital located in Chinle, Arizona. From 1989 to 2000, Dr. Crabtree provided OB/GYN services in the countries of Malawi and Zambia, Africa. She most Recently, she returned from Mozambique where she worked providing HIV care and treatment under the auspices of Doctors Without Borders. Dr. Crabtree will be joined in Ukiah by her husband, Dr. Jaisingh Niemer.

Welcoming new patients, Care for Her provides lifelong health care to women; it is a service of Mendocino Community Health Clinic, Inc (MCHC). Care for Her accepts private insurance and Medi-Cal; it can assist women in applying for public insurance as they seek obstetrical and gynecological care.
