| Honoring Excellence: Dr. William "Bill" Fisher
After a 20-year career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Bill Fisher and his wife, Carole, came to Ukiah seeking a friendly community in which to finish raising their three children. He brought with him a wealth of professional expertise and passion for public service.
Dr. Fisher earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland Medical School. While completing a General Surgery residency at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado, he pursued a Master of Surgery degree through the University of Colorado Medical School. He went on to complete a residency in Thoracic/Cardiovascular Surgery at Walter Reed General Hospital and then obtained a Master's Degree in Hospital Administration from Baylor University. From 1949 to 1969, his military career carried him around the globe; he served in Japan, Italy, France, Germany and Vietnam.
Arriving in Ukiah in 1969, he opened a private practice and, in the ensuing 20 years, he served his patients, raised his children and came to love his new community. In 1989, he “retired.”
Dr. Fisher’s vision has helped chart our course. At age 80, after serving our Board of Directors for over nine years, including four years as Chair, Dr. Fisher still arrives at his office three days a week. He is helping us achieve new levels of expertise through his leadership as Physician-Coordinator of the Cancer Collaboratives. Over the years, he has taught us efficient clinical business management and led us to achieve prestigious accreditation through the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. , and it is with gratitude for his service that we offer our community this annual report.
