Hillside Health Center Food Drive 2014

To celebrate the holidays, Hillside Health Center employees continued their tradition of competing with each other to see who could donate the most food to the Ukiah Food Bank. This year they added a new twist, creating a point system to encourage teams to donate healthy items.

The point structure offered three points for gold items—those that matched the theme of the week; two points for silver items—food with no sodium, low sodium or whole wheat; and one point for any canned or non-perishable item. An extra point was added for donations that were family-sized. The themes of the week were fruits and vegetables, proteins, whole grains, the color green, and healthy snacks. Hillside’s Community HealthCorps members coordinated the effort, sending weekly emails with clever graphics and fun reminders to remind employees to participate.

The month-long food drive culminated in victory for this year’s winning team: “The Cantastic Force,” comprised of Marlayna Trujillo, Gloria Ramirez, Yesenia Diaz, Bill Woodworth, Elise Wilkins, Brooke Dunsing, Veronica Clow, Cathy Koehler, Elisabeth Van Vranken, and Susie Hadel, who earned 2,200 points with 596 items. The second place winner of the challenge was “Soup-A-Stars” comprised of administrative employees who work in Hillside Health Center’s Fisher Building, and the third place winner was Team Kickass comprised of front desk reception employees and patient financial services employees. In total, Hillside employees donated 1,206 items to the Food Bank.

The true winners, of course, will be the people served by the Food Bank. Food Bank Coordinator Chris Selby shared his appreciation, and employees said they felt closer to each other and the community for having participated.
